Mode a la Moderne

At its best (and when it’s done right) the trend can feel light and effortless but at its worst it’s a clichéd style of dark rooms, old fashioned fabrics and clunky wooden furniture. Newbury - a recently renovated, ultra modern family home- could not be further from this farmhouse trend. Fans of the aforementioned granite features should look away now because this substantial detached home close to St Ouen’s Village is unashamedly contemporary. There’s not an exposed beam or an Aga in sight.
Immaculate throughout, this fantastic family home has been renovated by the current owners to the highest of standards. The exterior alone shouts modernity with its gleaming white walls, crisp black guttering and steel grey roof. Inside, the stunning kitchen- a stylistic vision of dark and light has been fitted with sleek minimalist units, all with integrated appliances leaving little ungainly clutter on the counters. The statement splashback in white marble matches that of the generous island- come-breakfast bar and works beautifully against the dark cabinetry. The double height ceiling and dramatic pendant lighting accentuate the generous proportions of the room yet the inclusion of a cosy sitting area complete with TV and fireplace is a clever design addition. Suddenly the room is not a cavernous echoing space - but the ideal setting in which to cook and chat with friends whilst they lounge and relax. Bifold doors leading outside to a large covered entertaining space complete the kitchen layout. Bypassing but not forgetting the separate fitted utility room located off the kitchen, you come to the dining room. Stylishly separated by contemporary crittall doors, the space currently accommodates six people but there is plenty of room to host more. Again there has been every attention to detail here, with statement lighting and a living wall art piece. The theme of space and light continues throughout not two but three generous hallways, one of which leads into the large living room with a log burner. Also on the ground floor is a handy cloakroom, and a fourth bedroom with ensuite- independent enough for an older child or the perfect space to house a visiting guest. Despite the high quality of renovation, there is still huge scope throughout the downstairs level for the new owners to put their stamp on this family home - and whilst there is little to do in terms of decor, the functionality of the rooms can certainly be tweaked to taste. One of the hallways, for example, could easily double up as a kids playroom. Upstairs, the sleeping arrangements are equal parts spacious and stylish. The three good size double bedrooms are each finished to the same immaculate standard as the ground floor. And whilst two of the bedrooms which share access with the large family bathroom are beautifully light and airy, it is the master suite that truly is the showstopper. Complete with an enormous fitted dressing room, the attention to detail is meticulous with each shelf, drawer and hanging unit cleverly illuminated for easy access and aesthetic pleasure. The elegant ensuite features a double vanity, trendy tilework, large walk-in shower and matte black sinkware. One final room completes the top floor- and like downstairs, provides the new owners with an opportunity to put their stamp on this beautiful home. Currently used as a gym, the room could be made into a fifth bedroom or perhaps a large home office and study space. Outside, the large secure garden includes a sprawling patio, swim spa and huge lawn. It works as both a fantastic family space and top entertaining spot thanks to the covered outdoor kitchen, drinks fridge and built-in BBQ. There are plenty of areas where guests can relax and while away a sunny afternoon, from the breakfast bar and stools to the dining table or corner sofa, you’ll be hard pressed to deny visitors. It’s good news then that parking is ample, with the oversized garage and driveway providing space for ten plus cars. On paper, a modern family home is not to everyone's tastes so don’t just take our word for it, take a gander around Newbury and we’ll guarantee you’ll soon forget what it was you loved about granite features in the first place.
